Derby pupils, Harry and Jack, celebrate being awarded Reading Plus Champion status!
Harry Scarf and Lewis Theaker, Year 3 and Year 4 pupils from Wyndham Spencer Academy, celebrate Reading Plus Champion status after being recognised nationally for their exceptional reading progress and attitude.
We developed the role of Reading Plus Champion to celebrate the reading efforts of pupils who use our online reading development programme – Reading Plus.
Teachers nationwide nominated hundreds of pupils for the role, and Lewis and Harry were two of only 11 pupils chosen. Michelle Garton, the Vice Principal who nominated them, said:
““Lewis takes great pride in his learning and shows a conscientious attitude to his work. He is eager to do further reading and research at home in order to reach his full potential – including accessing Reading Plus.
“Harry was a little more reluctant to read last year, but now he is showing so much more enthusiasm and motivation – Reading Plus has really supported with this. He shares lots of facts he has learnt with us and is eager to learn more each time.”
As Reading Plus Champions, Lewis and Harry will complete reading tasks such as interviewing a children’s author and writing blogs and book reviews for our website.
Michelle is confident the pair will make fantastic Champions, sharing: “Lewis already has some experience in a leadership role, being one of our school ‘Reading Captains’ last year, supporting others to develop their reading, inspiring them to read more, and harness a love of reading.”
“Becoming a Reading Plus Champion will encourage Harry to develop his love for reading even further. We are really proud of you, Harry!”
Lewis and Harry received a Reading Plus Champion kit each with prizes, including a book voucher, certificate, and badge to celebrate their achievement. The kit also includes various stationery materials to help them complete their tasks and a new, age-appropriate book.
Our Reading Development Consultant, Matt Lewis, said: “Congratulations to Lewis and Harry on your new roles – keep up the great work and continue inspiring your classmates. We can’t wait to see what you achieve as a Reading Plus Champion.
