DreamBox Reading Plus and other reading programmes: Part 1

At Reading Solutions UK, we understand the importance of fostering a love for reading and equipping students with the necessary skills to excel.

Many popular reading programmes focus on reading for pleasure and not necessarily the personalised instruction students need to become proficient, skilful and confident readers.

Do you have students who are:

  • Focused on passing a test rather than enjoying a story?
  • Struggling to find a high-interest book at their reading ability?
  • Disgruntled because the book they wanted to read was ‘too high’ and, therefore, they couldn’t read it?
  • Embarrassed because they had to publicly put back the book that was ‘too high’?
  • Reluctant to read for fear their peers will see them reading a lower-ability book?
  • Able to cheat the quiz systems?
  • Struggling to read independently as they learn and think differently?

If any of these resonate, it could be that you have not yet found a suitable reading programme for your students’ needs.

An effective reading programme should:

  • Identify your students’ reading ability levels. Are they below, at, or above year-level expectations?
  • Identify their reading skills gaps through QLA data.
  • Teach key reading skills such as fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Provide differentiated and individualised instruction according to their abilities.
  • Be able to test students’ deeper comprehension and critical thinking skills.

How can DreamBox Reading Plus help?

  • Reading Plus focuses on building reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills, equipping students with the skills to read for pleasure.
  • These skills will help them access year-level texts and equip them with the skills to read for pleasure.
  • It adapts to each student’s reading level and pace, providing personalised instruction to address individual needs. This ensures that every student receives the support they require to succeed.
  • With Reading Plus, teachers gain valuable insights into students’ reading abilities and progress. This data allows for targeted instruction and intervention to support student growth.

By implementing Reading Plus, you create a holistic approach to reading development, combining the joy of reading with the necessary skills for success.

  • We use Accelerated Reader (AR) alongside Reading Plus - they are very different but offer complementary approaches. Reading Plus is very functional and supports pupils in improving reading comprehension, fluency and stamina. Accelerated Reader is really about encouraging children to enjoy reading.

Similarly, on average, children who started AR in Year 4 made no additional reading progress compared to children in comparison schools.
