International Women’s Day is recognised every year worldwide on March 8th to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action.
International Women’s Day coincides with National Career’s Week, which runs from the 6th to the 11th of March this year. This week aims to support and guide young people seeking information and inspiration regarding future career opportunities.
At Reading Solutions UK, we know how important support and aspirations are in helping young people reach their potential in life – whatever their goals might be. We wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work done by some of the women within our business. By sharing the stories of their academic and professional journeys, we hope to provide helpful insight into the many possible pathways and outcomes available to young girls.
Chelsea Dennis, Head of Finance
Can you tell us a little bit about your academic and professional journey to Reading Solutions UK?
When I was 16, I left school, having earned 11 GCSEs and wanted to continue on my academic journey.
I decided to venture into further education by pursuing an apprenticeship in Business Administration and gained a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3.
This gave me the background, knowledge, and qualifications I needed to land my role at Reading Solutions UK, and I can’t wait to see what else I will accomplish in the future.
I am always looking for ways to improve and ensure I complete my job to the highest level possible. Therefore, I am currently undertaking an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 3 to be completed in Summer 2023, followed by my Level 4 qualification in 2024.
I do all this alongside my day-to-day duties at Reading Solutions UK.
Have you had to overcome any professional challenges?
It wasn’t always an easy road to my current position. Despite my ability and hard work, I was made redundant from two jobs previously to being hired at Reading Solutions UK.
While this was a big challenge to overcome, it all paid off in the end. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m glad my journey led me to my current job.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy both my role and the wider company culture and ethos of Reading Solutions UK.
I have the freedom to make my own choices as I have the complete trust of the management in my decisions. This trust is returned as I know I can always rely on them to support me when I need it, and they don’t make me feel any pressure to conform.
A positive work/life balance is also essential to me. It makes me feel valued and respected as an employee and allows me to work to a higher standard, which reflects the company’s values.
What does a typical day look like to you?
My typical day as the Head of Finance revolves around ensuring the company’s financial health. My duties include:
- Producing accurate financial reports and information.
- Cash flow statements.
- Profit projection.
- Managing credit.
- Providing advice on financial decisions.
- Financial forecasts.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
To relax, don’t sweat the small stuff.
Also, embrace change – make the most of it, as it could lead to something bigger and better.
What is your proudest achievement to date?
I am proud of the many things I have achieved. However, the achievement that stands out the most is that I was able to purchase my first house independently by the time I hit 30.
Outside of your job, what do you enjoy doing?
I am happiest spending time with my two beautiful nieces and the rest of my family. Whether in the house or on days out, I enjoy spending time with the people I love.
I also enjoy exploring new places – visiting historical sites, landmarks and going on holiday. Thanks to Reading Solutions UK’s work/life balance ethos, I can do the things I enjoy often.
