Celebrate women's achievements. Raise awareness about discrimination.

International Women’s Day is recognised every year worldwide on March 8th to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action.

International Women’s Day coincides with National Career’s Week, which runs from the 6th to the 11th of March this year. This week aims to support and guide young people seeking information and inspiration regarding future career opportunities.

At Reading Solutions UK, we know how important support and aspirations are in helping young people reach their potential in life – whatever their goals might be. We wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work done by some of the women within our business. By sharing the stories of their academic and professional journeys, we hope to provide helpful insight into the many possible pathways and outcomes available to young girls.

Sara Whitfield, Customer Support Manager

Can you tell us a little bit about your academic and professional journey to Reading Solutions UK?

I left school at 16 with 10 GCSEs and no clue what I wanted to do, so I moved on to college, where I studied Business Administration. Following a work placement completed during my course, I was offered a part-time job as a hotel receptionist – this was the start of my journey providing customer service.

I only studied other qualifications later in life when I decided to re-train to teach. As I had worked in the travel industry at that point for around 15 years, it made sense to look at a Travel & Tourism pathway; however, during my training, I came to the realisation that I adored working with children and young adults that had educational challenges, in various ways. I ended up working in the Special Educational Needs (SEN) field for around eight years before being made redundant.

This eventually led me to Reading Solutions, where I am continuing my learning journey and studying for a Business Management degree.

Is gender inequality important to you?

It is essential, yes. I truly believe there are not enough women in senior management positions in many sectors.

Have you had to overcome any professional challenges?

Yes, I ran my own business for around eight years, and it is challenging to do that, as well as being a mum, wife etc. However, I am lucky enough to have a very supportive family, which makes a difference. I am not afraid to ask for help when needed, nobody should be, but I recognise that it is not always easy for some.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love to see the student’s progress while using the programme, and knowing we have supported a school in making that difference is just an incredible feeling.

What does a typical day look like to you?

Like any busy working mum, my day starts with sorting family stuff before leaving the house. I arrive at work around 8.15 am after doing the school run.

My workday starts by catching up and replying to any emails that come in overnight, and then I plan my day around any scheduled training calls. I have various day-to-day tasks around managing my team and our workload; nevertheless, my team members are great, so that takes care of itself.

I spend most of my time checking in with our Reading Plus partner schools and ensuring everything is running smoothly for them behind the scenes.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would say: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, as things always work out well in the end. Just keep pushing forwards, and don’t let anyone put your fire out!

What is your proudest achievement to date?

Having my children and seeing them develop and grow into very confident young people whilst working full-time at a senior level.

Outside of your job, what do you enjoy doing?

I love a good rugby game. Other than that, I love getting outdoors with our dogs and walking.

Anything else you would like to add?

Never be afraid to follow your dreams; only good things come from that.
