Our second annual International Reading Conference is nearly underway!
We have lined up experts who will share strategies and best practices to encourage reading for pleasure, develop a reading culture, and accelerate reading growth.
From the 6th to the 8th of June, you can attend various webinars to hear from and network with thought leaders in education, literacy experts, and EdTech specialists on techniques to encourage students to become confident, lifelong readers.
We’re excited to introduce our KS2 specialists:
Alex Reynolds – Director of Primary Learning & Curricula at Northern Education Trust. Alex will deliver a session on “Through the Keyhole of the House of Reading”.
Verity Lee – Assistant Head of School at Sunnyside Spencer Academy and Evidence Lead in Education. Verity will talk about “Building a thriving reading culture through the use of technology”.
Leanne Sayer – Year 6 Teacher and Online Reading Lead at Ribbon Academy. Leanne will discuss “Creating an engaging reading culture with online and offline strategies”.
Mark Anderson – Best-selling author, award-winning blogger and popular speaker. Mark’s session will be “Using technology to engage reluctant readers in KS2 and KS3”.
Tim Rasinski – Professor of Literacy Education at Kent State University. Tim’s session will be “The ‘art and science of Teaching Reading”.
Why did you want to get involved in the International Reading Conference 2023?
“Reading for pleasure is arguably underrated and undervalued by the teaching professionals – this seemed an opportunity to profile the impact of recreational reading of fiction on young people.” – Teresa Cremin.
“I think it is imperative for teachers not to forget that they are artists as well as scientists.” – Tim Rasinski.
“I got involved in the International Reading Conference to share my passion for combining technology with reading. Investing in the right technology can have an incredible impact on teaching and learning, and pupil progress. I believe technology should be used to redefine learning – allowing us to achieve outcomes that were previously inconceivable.” – Verity Lee.
What will attendees be able to take away from your session?
“Delegates will take away strategies for principled research-informed practice that nurtures reading for pleasure and capitalise on the affective power of fiction.” – Teresa Cremin.
“Teachers will come away with science-based strategies for teaching reading that are also engaging and artful!” – Tim Rasinski.
“Attendees will be able to explore a curriculum built around the use of high text and enhanced through the use of 1:1 iPad provision from Year 2 to Year 6. I will demonstrate how carefully crafted our digital vision using our lessons from remote learning and our investment in Showbie – adding capacity in the classroom and meeting the needs of our increasingly growing number of pupils with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) and EAL (English as an Additional Language). I will share how we are closing the gap between groups of vulnerable children and share the results of Reading Plus using evidence from a recent research project.” – Verity Lee.
Why do you think reading is so essential for children’s education?
“There is unequivocal international evidence that reading for pleasure is associated with higher academic outcomes, richer vocabulary, wider general knowledge, and it enhances social and emotional wellbeing. It is not being able to read that makes the difference, although it’s essential, it’s being a frequent reader of choice.” – Teresa Cremin.
“Reading is essential and critical for successful learning in all disciplines and content areas.” – Tim Rasinski.
“At Sunnyside Spencer Academy, we put reading at the heart of our curriculum. We recognise that by reading more, we will know more. The use of high-quality texts enriches all subject areas. We see reading as a passport to the world where pupils can use high-quality texts as windows to see the world and mirrors in which they can see themselves.” – Verity Lee.
We are thrilled to have a number of amazing, experienced and inspiring speakers at the conference this year. They will share their knowledge and thoughts on various topics, so make sure you register to attend the conference!
