Sunderland pupil Emily celebrate being awarded Reading Plus Champion status!
Emily Short, a Year 6 pupil from Dubmire Primary Academy, celebrates Reading Plus Champion status after being recognised nationally for her exceptional reading progress and attitude.
We developed the role of Reading Plus Champion to celebrate the reading efforts of pupils who use our online reading development programme – Reading Plus.
Teachers nationwide nominated hundreds of pupils for the role, and Emily was one of only 11 pupils chosen. Beth Thompson, the teacher who nominated Emily, said:
“Emily is a superb reader, who actively engages with a story and identifies with characters. Emily is able to explore the meaning of a story and connect it to her own life experiences by reflecting on themes and topics within it.”
As a Reading Plus Champion, Emily will complete reading tasks such as interviewing a children’s author and writing blogs and book reviews for our website.
Beth is confident Emily will be an amazing Reading Plus Champion after already having success as Reading Leader at Dubmire. She told us: “Emily helps other children establish their love of reading for pleasure. She has also been pivotal in the renovation of our library, giving wonderful ideas that will lead to inspiration and wonder for all.”
Emily received a Reading Plus Champion kit with prizes, including a book voucher, certificate, and badge to celebrate her achievement. The kit also includes various stationery materials to help her complete her tasks and a new, age-appropriate book.
Beth finished: “Emily has an inquisitive mind and asks thoughtful questions from what she has read. Her ambitious work ethos has enabled her to gain super scores on Reading Plus, excellent marks within all tests and above all, a sheer love of all literature.”
Our Reading Development Consultant Lee Carrick, said: “Congratulations to Emily on your new role – keep up the great work and continue inspiring your classmates. We can’t wait to see what you achieve as a Reading Plus Champion.
