Sunderland pupil Gabriella celebrates being awarded Reading Plus Champion status!
Gabriella Akanni, a Year 6 pupil from Plains Farm Academy, celebrates Reading Plus Champion status after being recognised nationally for her exceptional reading progress and attitude.
We developed the role of Reading Plus Champion to celebrate the reading efforts of pupils who use our online reading development programme – Reading Plus.
Teachers nationwide nominated hundreds of pupils for the role, and Gabriella was one of only 11 pupils chosen. Andy Hunter, the Deputy Head Teacher who nominated Gabriella, said:
“Gabriella is a huge lover of Reading Plus. Since starting in September, she is already working on Level H – 3 years above her age range. She loves to level up because it gives her access to new texts. She also likes to recommend texts to others if they are struggling to choose.”
As a Reading Plus Champion, Gabriella will complete reading tasks such as interviewing a children’s author and writing blogs and book reviews for our website.
Andy finished: “Gabriella has a real flair and love of reading. She takes any opportunity to read. Currently she is busy supporting our staff in developing the library into a space where she can start her own Book Club.”
Gabriella received a Reading Plus Champion kit with prizes, including a book voucher, certificate, and badge to celebrate her achievement. The kit also includes various stationery materials to help her complete her tasks and a new, age-appropriate book.
Our Reading Development Consultant Lee Carrick said: “Congratulations to Gabriella on your new role – keep up the great work and continue inspiring your classmates. We can’t wait to see what you achieve as a Reading Plus Champion.
