Before joining our team, Jonny taught English in China. He was first attracted to working in education because he wanted to help people achieve more than they would have otherwise been capable of. His role at RSUK allows him to use his knowledge and experience in the education sector to help teachers successfully implement Reading Plus in their schools.
Why did you want to work in the education sector?
I wanted to help people to achieve more than they would have otherwise been capable of.
I didn’t work very hard at school, but I now know what I should have done. If I can help people to understand that sooner, then great!
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Ambitious, confident, knowledgeable.
What attracted you to become a Reading Development Consultant for Reading Solutions UK?
Belief in our Managing Director Mike and Director Ian, not only in the product they were working with but their vision and company ethos.
What the programme offers; Reading Plus is unique in that it teaches silent reading fluency. Reading inefficiently is a big hurdle for lots of pupils as it makes reading more of a chore than a pleasure.
Having not been a big reader myself, I know how important it is to engage pupils and keep them engaged, from an early age.
What was your first job?
My first ever job was as a Sales Assistant at JJB Sports in Sunderland while at college, but my first full-time job was teaching English in China when I left University.
Favourite childhood book?
I wasn’t an avid reader as a child, but when I did, it would be about football. I’d have to probably say the Sunderland AFC Annual 1998/99.
When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing?
Having fun with my wife and son, spending time with friends and watching/playing football.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation – I love seeing new places so it would be great to be able to go anywhere, anytime without the time it takes to do the actual travelling!
